Perhaps the most famous seafood restaurant in Britain first appeared in The Good Food Guide in 1984, although, as the Guide noted in 1986: ‘It has taken 11 years for the people around Padstow to discover the restaurant – now it is difficult to get a table and there are plans to expand.’ Now approaching its fourth decade, these excerpts from the first ten years outline the rise of the Padstein phenomenon.
Originally conceived as a workers’ canteen for Sir Richard Rogers’ architectural practice next door, The River Café (now in its fourth decade) has gone on to achieve international stardom as a glowing tribute to Italian regional cooking.
